The basic advantages of duplex stainless steel are as follows:
(1) Duplex stainless steel with a chromium content of 18%-22% has good resistance to neutral chloride stress corrosion under low stress. Type 18-8 austenitic stainless steel generally used in neutral chloride solution above 70℃ is prone to stress corrosion cracking. Heat exchangers and evaporators made of this type of stainless steel are used in industrial media containing trace amounts of chloride and hydrogen sulfide. Other equipment has a tendency to produce stress corrosion cracking, but duplex stainless steel has good resistance. For example, the typical medium conditions for stress corrosion resistance of OOCrI8Ni5 Mo3Si2 steel containing 18% Cr are: Cl- <1000mg/L, T <150°C, pH ≥ 7, H2S concentration is about 5000mg/L, CI- concentration is about 30mg/L , T <150℃, pH ≥ 7.
(2) Duplex stainless steel containing molybdenum has good pitting corrosion resistance. When having the same pitting corrosion equivalent value (PRE = Cr%+3.3%Mo+16%N), the critical pitting potential of duplex stainless steel and austenitic stainless steel are similar. The pitting corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel containing 18% Cr is equivalent to that of AISI316L stainless steel. The pitting and crevice corrosion resistance of 25% Cr, especially oxygen-containing high-anchor duplex stainless steel exceeds AISI316L.
(3) It has good corrosion fatigue and wear corrosion resistance, and is used in pumps, valves and other equipment under certain corrosive media conditions.
(4) It has good comprehensive mechanical properties, high strength and fatigue strength, and its yield strength is twice that of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel.
(5) Good weldability and low thermal cracking tendency. Generally, there is no need for preheating before welding and no heat treatment after welding. It can be welded with dissimilar steels such as 18-8 austenitic stainless steel or carbon steel.
(6) The hot working temperature range of duplex stainless steel with low chromium (l8%Cr) is wider than that of 18-8 type austenitic stainless steel, and its resistance is lower. It can be directly rolled to produce steel plates without forging. Steels containing high chromium (25%Cr) are more difficult to hot work than austenitic stainless steels.
(7) Compared with austenitic stainless steel, it has higher thermal conductivity and lower linear expansion coefficient. It is suitable for equipment lining and production of composite plates, and it is also suitable for manufacturing heat exchanger tube cores.
