Reaction sintered silicon carbide (fine-grained reaction sintering SIC, RBSIC for short) uses porous carbon profiles to react with molten metal silicon to sinter into monolithic silicon carbide. It is a material with excellent wear resistance. About 10%~12% of free silicon should be prevented from being used in strong acids and strong alkalis. This is because the corrosion resistance is worse than that of atmospheric sintered silicon carbide. But these free silicon play a role in reducing friction and wear. It is used in mechanical seals to form an excellent sealing pair with carbon graphite. API682 stipulates that this sealing material should be preferentially used.
