The hardness of silicon carbide is close to that of diamond, and it has outstanding wear resistance. Silicon carbide is widely used in the sealing of process pumps. In addition to melting strong alkalis and strong oxidizing gases at high temperatures, full-concentration sulfuric acid and caustic alkalis with close boiling points can also stably resist corrosion. It has a much higher hardness than alumina, and is a material with particularly superior thermal shock resistance and thermal characteristics, especially for maintaining corrosion resistance and wear resistance in a large temperature range. In occasions with high wear resistance and high performance, mechanical seal manufacturers and users use more silicon carbide (including siliconized graphite) instead of carbon graphite and other materials.
