When the mechanical seal is working, the rotating ring must overcome the friction torque on the end face to rotate with the shaft.

The stationary ring is generally supported by the cavity. The supporting method should ensure reliable sealing of the stationary ring, reasonable stress, and minimize deformation.

If the supporting method of the ring is unreasonable, under the action of medium pressure, spring force and supporting reaction force, it may cause excessive deformation of the seal ring and make the seal failure.

Generally, the modulus of elasticity of metal materials is relatively large, even under the action of higher pressure, the deformation of the ring is not significant. For materials with low modulus of elasticity, such as graphite and plastic rings, when under high pressure, non-negligible force deformation often occurs.

In mechanical seals, soft materials such as graphite and plastic are often used as static rings. For a static ring with a given structural size, under certain load conditions, the degree of deformation mainly depends on the ring support method.
