The end faces of the two seal rings of ordinary mechanical seals are parallel and continuous planes, and are designed to be one wide and one narrow, which can avoid the end faces slipping and dislocation caused by the shaft vibration during operation and being scratched by the edges. Under the condition of high pv value, it is difficult to maintain a stable and continuous liquid film between the parallel surfaces. The deterioration of lubrication conditions often causes excessive wear, which greatly shortens the seal life. Therefore, there are various types of grooves on the end face or the end face is made into a structure with a certain slope, and the end face is artificially formed with the necessary lubricating liquid film. This kind of mechanical seal with a special end face shape that can be manually controlled is called controllable Membrane mechanical seal. According to the different principles of liquid film formation, it can be divided into two types: hydrostatic pressure type and hydrodynamic pressure type.

1. Hydrostatic mechanical seal

The hydrostatic mechanical seal introduces the sealing liquid with sufficient pressure to balance the end face compaction load or the sealed self-medium into the seal end face to form a static pressure fluid film with sufficient lubrication and cooling effect on the end face.

2. Fluid dynamic pressure type mechanical seal

The fluid dynamic pressure type mechanical seal is provided with a lubrication groove on the end face of the seal. After the medium enters the lubrication groove, it relies on the rotation of the moving ring to drive the fluid in the groove to generate a liquid wedge dynamic pressure effect to form a fluid film on the end face. The fluid dynamic pressure mechanical seal has a variety of structural types such as simple groove (crescent groove) type, spiral groove type, circumferential groove type and corrugated type.
